Tools for creativity

All this is useful for creative work with dough.

Basic drying methods

When the product is ready, it must be properly dried. There are several methods. Consider the most popular of them.

Method 1 — In the oven (preheated)

Drying in a slightly opened oven at a temperature of 55-80 ° C (the article is placed in a preheated oven). Place the product on a pan covered with parchment paper or in a heat-resistant dish. The duration of the process can be about an hour or longer, depending on the size of the figure.

Method 2 — Natural Conditions

This refers to drying in the open air (but not under direct sunlight). This method takes longer than the first, but it is more effective. The product is best placed on a wooden or plastic surface. Drying by air takes about 3-4 days. But we do not recommend to dry on the home radiator — this can lead to the fact that the craft is cracked and crumbled.

Method 3 — In the oven (cold)

According to this method, the artifacts from the salted dough should be put in a cold oven and then switched on, warming up to 150 ° C. There, the products must also cool down while the oven cools.

Different ways of design

Figures from an unpainted dough are attractive in themselves. However, after drying, they can be painted with gouache, watercolor or acrylic paints. They are good because they dry quickly, do not smear and do not leave marks on their hands.

Decoration from salted dough

Methods of staining:

1. Watercolors paint with a brush and stir with water and apply to the product so that they do not spread.

2. Mix gouache with glue PVA, evenly cover with this mixture craft.

3. You can give the dough a certain color even during mixing. Divide it into parts — they should be as many as the shades needed to be painted. Roll balls out of them, in the middle of each make a depression and drop a couple of drops of food coloring diluted in water. Then mash the dough so that it stains evenly.

The molding from the salt dough also allows the use of various elements for decoration. It can be cereals, macaroni, buttons, shells, beads, all kinds of threads and ribbons. The space for imagination is unlimited!

What is varnishing for?

Finished products are varnished to ensure that the paint does not burn out and was not washed off, and the appearance of the work did not deteriorate over time. Lacquering is used if necessary and only at the request of the author.

Giving a shine to the product can be varnished:

— liquid — it is necessary to cover the product in several layers, the result is ruddy and natural;

— thick — it protects the handicraft better from moisture, can be used as a lacquer giving a mirror shine, and matte.

Preferably use an aerosol varnish. A single application is enough to make the paint brighter, and the work is protected from damage.

Although, practice shows that the correct drying allows you not even to resort to varnishing — the product will remain in its original form for many years.

Possible problems and solutions

Here is a list of problems that may arise when drying or decorating a toy from a salt dough:

1. The dough was covered with blisters or cracks after drying. This can be caused by improper choice of flour or non-compliance with drying rules. Flour for modeling is the most simple and inexpensive — low-grade rye or wheat. And it is necessary to dry the product without excessive haste in a slightly heated oven with a slightly opened door. In general, it is better, if the craft will dry naturally.

2. The product cracked after staining. This can happen if you started painting an insufficiently dried up handmade article. Dry it in the fresh air, smooth out the roughness with sandpaper and paint again.

3. The product cracked because of the large thickness. In this case, the excess of the dough should be removed from the back or bottom. And that the large product is dried in the oven evenly, it must be periodically turned over.

4. Some element has broken away. You can try gluing it with PVA glue, but it’s better just to smooth out the unevenness and decorate with some decoration.

5. The craftsmanship has faded after staining. Additional varnish coating is able to restore the color to the former saturation and make the article brighter.

Crafts from salted dough

According to some assumptions, the first molding from the dough began to be used by cooks to decorate baking. Today from such a wonderful material you can sculpt anything: paintings, souvenir figures, and toys.

So, when you already know how to make a salt dough, let’s start creating, in fact, crafts from it.

1. Roll out the dough with a rolling pin so that its thickness is 0.5 cm.

2. On this sheet make prints of any cookie shapes. These are the future figures from the salt dough.

3. Turn on the oven and cover the baking sheet with baking paper.

4. With the help of a wooden spatula or just with your hands, move the figures to the baking tray.

5. Cocktail tube or toothpick, make a hole in each of the figures so that you can then thread through it and hang the figurines, say, on a Christmas tree (well, or hang them around the house).

6. At the minimum temperature, bake the products in the oven for several hours.

7. Transfer them to a flat surface and allow to cool.

8. Color the toys at your own discretion.

Paintings from the dough

Dough plasticity allows you to create not only small voluminous souvenir items, but also paintings of salted dough. Of course, for their creation, some skills, patience and perseverance will be required. However, the result is able to exceed all expectations, becoming a wonderful gift for close people or decorating the interior of your house.

We operate in stages:

1. Creating a painting, like any other crafts made of dough, begins with the preparation, in fact, of the test. There are many different variations of recipes, but the most popular is: 1 cup salt finely ground, 2 cups flour, 200 ml. of water. Mix up the elastic salt dough for handmade articles, pack it in a plastic bag and send it to the refrigerator for a couple of hours.

2. Get the finished material and can begin to create by pinching a piece of dough out of the package (it is quickly covered with a crust in the air).

3. To connect parts to each other, do not use glue, but water.

4. It is more convenient to create a picture on foil. Dry the result is necessary: in the oven or in the air.

5. When the craft is dry, paint it gouache and cover with two layers of varnish.

6. Finally, attach the painting to the canvas or any other fabric in the frame.

Very beautiful look all sorts of cats, birds, snowmen, bears, dachshunds, flowers and much more. You can create a painting of the story of a fairy tale — this is especially interesting for the children. Some examples of works for inspiration you can see in the pictures.

Helpful Tips

1. Each recipe for a salt dough for handmade items assumes the use of exclusively wheat or rye flour (but not exactly pancakes) and a fine grinding salt (not iodized, as the dough turns out to be not homogeneous, but with large patches).

2. Water for mixing should be used very cold. Add it in portions, diligently kneading the dough. Depending on your choice of flour, water may require a different amount.

3. The dough should not stick to your hands or crumble. If it is badly molded, add a little water, and if it sticks — a little flour.

4. Salty dough is perfectly stored in the refrigerator in a plastic bag or in a container with a tight-fitting lid. Use it on a piece as necessary, because the finished dough in the air is quickly covered with a dry crust that spoils the appearance of the products. The shelf life of the dough — 1 week.

5. Crafts from small elements look more elegant. In order for the parts to adhere well to each other, moisten the joints with water using a brush.

6. To tint the dough itself, add a slightly diluted food coloring (for Easter eggs). From the dough of different colors, you can create new shades: for this, simply smash the fingers with colored pieces.

Dough plasticity is not just a child’s play, but also a corrective activity that allows developing fine motor skills, assiduity and imagination of kids, bringing up aesthetic taste. And for adults it is a great way of self-expression and renewal. We wish you inspiration, and let creativity be only a joy!

We will be happy if you share with your friends.
